FAQ
- What is bacteriostatic water used for?
- Reconstituting lyophilized peptide powder at the bench. The benzyl alcohol preservative lets one vial be punctured many times over weeks, which a preservative-free diluent cannot do.
- How long does bacteriostatic water last after opening?
- 28 days from first puncture, following the USP beyond-use convention for opened multiple-dose containers. Unopened, use the printed expiry date on the vial.
- Can I use sterile water instead of bacteriostatic water?
- Only if the whole vial is used in one sitting. Sterile Water for Injection, USP has no preservative and is labelled single use, so an opened vial is discarded after the draw.
- Does bacteriostatic water kill bacteria?
- No. Benzyl alcohol is bacteriostatic, meaning it slows bacterial growth. It does not sterilize a solution that has already been contaminated.
- Should bacteriostatic water be refrigerated?
- Not required. The label says controlled room temperature, 20 to 25 C (68 to 77 F), and do not freeze. Many labs refrigerate after first puncture, which is fine.
- How much bacteriostatic water do I add to a 5 mg vial?
- Whatever volume fits your math. Adding 2 ml gives 2.5 mg per ml, so 10 units on a U-100 syringe (0.1 ml) holds 0.25 mg. More diluent means finer volume control.
- What does USP mean on a bacteriostatic water label?
- It means the product is tested against United States Pharmacopeia standards for purity, sterility and labelled preservative content. It is a quality statement, not a brand.
- Is a 30 ml or 10 ml bacteriostatic water vial better?
- 30 ml is the standard multi-dose size. It only pays off if most of it is drawn within 28 days; at 2 ml per reconstitution it covers about 15 peptide vials.
