Cases here do one of two jobs: keep a pen and its cartridges from being knocked around in a bag or a drawer, or keep contents cool while they move. PreppinPeppers stocks a hard-shell zip carry case sized for one pen and its consumables, and an EVA travel case that ships with an ice pack.

Protection and temperature are separate problems

It is worth separating them before choosing, because a case that solves one usually compromises on the other. A rigid shell that resists crushing has thin walls and almost no thermal mass. An insulated case has thick walls and holds temperature, but takes up noticeably more room for the same contents. Nothing does both well at pocket size, and a case advertised as doing both is generally doing one.

So decide what is actually at risk. If the pen lives on a bench and travels occasionally in a bag, mechanical protection is the whole requirement. If contents must stay cool for hours, thermal performance is the requirement and the case is secondary.

Hard-shell pen carry case

The portable pen carry case is a durable PU hard shell with a zip closure, sized for one pen plus spare 3 ml cartridges and small accessories. It fits the Gansulin pen and the V1, V2 and V3 pens.

What it is for: stopping a pen rolling loose in a bag, stopping crimp caps being chipped by whatever else is in the drawer, and keeping the cartridges with the pen instead of somewhere else. It offers no thermal performance at all, and it is not meant to.

EVA travel case with ice pack

The EVA travel case is the passive cooling option: a moulded EVA shell supplied with an ice pack, sized to fit reconstitution pens. There is no battery and nothing to charge, which is exactly the point for a short trip or a flight where powered equipment is inconvenient.

Its limit is honest and worth stating: passive cooling runs from the ice pack, so it holds for as long as the pack does and no longer, and it gives you no reading of the internal temperature. For a couple of hours across town that is enough. For a full travel day it is not.

When you need a powered cooler instead

If contents must stay cold for most of a day, or you want the internal temperature displayed rather than assumed, that is a different product class. The travel coolers run on a battery or continuously on USB and put a number on the lid, and one of them also runs with no power at all from a freezable ring. Between the two collections: a case protects, a cooler regulates.

Handling and care

Store a pen in its case with the cartridge removed if it is going to sit for a long period, so the plunger seal is not held compressed. Let an ice pack come fully to room temperature before sealing it away, since condensation trapped in a closed case is what corrodes a crimp cap and softens a pouch seal. Wipe the shell rather than immersing it, and let it dry open.

Common questions

Which pens fit these cases?
The hard-shell carry case fits the Gansulin pen and the V1, V2 and V3 reconstitution pens, along with spare 3 ml cartridges and small accessories. The EVA travel case is sized to fit reconstitution pens.

Does the carry case keep anything cool?
No. It is a protective hard shell with no insulation or thermal mass. For cooling, use the EVA travel case with its ice pack, or a powered cooler from the travel cases collection.

How long does the EVA case stay cold?
For as long as its ice pack does, and it gives no temperature readout. That suits a short trip. For a full travel day, or when you want the internal temperature displayed, a powered cooler is the right tool.

What is the difference between a case and a travel cooler?
A case protects against knocks and keeps parts together. A cooler regulates temperature, runs on a battery or USB, and displays the internal temperature. They solve different problems and many benches use both.

How should a case be stored?
Keep it dry and let it dry open after wiping. Let ice packs reach room temperature before sealing them in, because trapped condensation is what damages crimp caps and pouch seals.
