What the research community gets wrong about compounded peptide sourcing
Easier compounding rules change the paperwork a pharmacy files. They do not change what is actually in the vial on your bench. A few common assumptions cause the most trouble when researchers relax their own checks.
- A looser rule does not mean a verified compound. Regulatory category and bench quality are two separate things. Fewer compliance steps for a supplier tell you nothing about the purity of the material you receive.
- "Compounded" is not the same as "tested." The label on the vial is not proof of content. Ask for a batch-specific certificate of analysis with the testing method listed, not a generic spec sheet that could apply to any lot.
- More suppliers means more variation, not just more supply. When new sources enter the space, lot-to-lot differences get wider. Run your own assay on each new lot before you trust it, even from a supplier you have used before.
- Purity is not the only thing that fails. A peptide can start clean and still degrade from handling. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles, foaming, and air-liquid interfaces during mixing can aggregate protein, so gentle handling matters as much as the source.
- Sterile water and bacteriostatic water are not interchangeable. Plain sterile water has no preservative. A reconstituted solution you plan to keep for more than a day needs bacteriostatic water, which contains benzyl alcohol to hold back bacterial growth.
