One batch might use a different buffer or have no preservatives. In research, that variation can mess with your data. Treat each batch as unique until you check it.

Many compounded peptides come as liquid solutions. You do not need to reconstitute them. But liquid peptides degrade faster than freeze-dried powders. Shelf life may be only a few weeks. Store liquid compounds at 2-8°C and plan to use them soon. Freezing might damage the peptide, so avoid it unless the pharmacy says it is okay.

What the research community gets wrong about compounded peptides

Compounded peptides show up on the bench more often, and a few common assumptions can quietly hurt your data. Here is where lab habits tend to slip.

  • "Compounded" does not mean lab-grade or lot-to-lot identical. Small batches can differ in purity, buffer, and preservative from one order to the next. Treat every lot as new material you have not characterized yet.
  • A liquid solution is not automatically more convenient or more stable. It skips the reconstitution step, but liquid peptides generally break down faster than freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder, and usable shelf life can be measured in weeks.
  • Cold storage slows degradation, it does not stop it. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles and air or liquid interfaces (shaking, foaming, drawing bubbles) can drive aggregation even in vials kept at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius.
  • A Certificate of Analysis for one lot does not describe the next lot. Because batches are small, specifications can shift, so identity and purity are worth re-checking per batch rather than assumed.
  • The preservative in bacteriostatic water guards against microbial growth, it does not rescue chemistry. Benzyl alcohol limits contamination in a multi-use vial, but it cannot restore a peptide that has already degraded, and the water itself has its own storage window.

Reconstitute a fresh vial, log the temperature it was stored and shipped at, and record the appearance of the solution (clear, cloudy, any visible particles) at reconstitution and then again after a set number of days in the fridge.
